  1. Minutes of Previous Meeting of June 7, 2006.  Approval of the minutes.  Moved/ Seconded/ CARRIED.  The report prepared by Al is to be attached to the minutes as part of official records.  Al was informed by Brad of the VHS format coverage of the Bike to Work event on CH TV.
  2. Issues arising from minutes:  Matt & Al are to report back on items regarding bike rack requirements as part of new zoning by-law being developed.  Al to check to have police officer attend future meeting regarding bike thefts.  Daryl to check about an official archives for the World Cycling event.  Bob awaiting response from waste management staff.
  1. West Hamilton Bike Study: A handout was distributed by Brian regarding the progress to date on this study.  Information included the extent of the study area and options being considered for various sub areas including Aberdeen, Longwood, and Westdale.  Members expressed a concern that the study area did not include the Chatham St connection to the McMaster Innovation Park as this would be a critical connection north of Aberdeen through to Westdale.  Brian will convey this concern to other City staff and the consultant (McCormick Rankin).  Alternative #2 for Studholme to Dundurn should include a second east-west connection on the north side of Aberdeen.  It was asked that in detailed design to have all bike lanes come right up to the stop bar at intersections.  The members were supportive of the bike route through Westdale to be along Cline Ave. however City staff was reminded by members that there had been previous discussions to design bike lanes on King St through Westdale Village and continuing to Forsyth Ave.  A review of this analysis would be appreciated.  The West Hamilton information is/will be on the City website – through the Hamilton/Kirkendall study material website or Hamilton/cycling page.

As a separate item (not suggested as an expansion of this same study), a discussion at a future meeting is to be held to discuss options for 2-way bike lanes on Main St over Hwy 403.  Brian to bring mapping to future meeting.

  1. Bike Racks on busses: A letter drafted by Thom was read and comment was discussed by members.  Thom to edit and the committee will send to the HSR and cc councilors and media.
  2. Other Items:
    1. York Blvd – City Staff are meeting July 11 with residents who requested a Part II Order to discuss their concerns/comments.  It is the intention of the City to attempt to resolve these concerns to allow for the residents to withdraw their requests so that the project can proceed.
    2. North Service Rd – construction starts this summer (and hopefully complete), design currently underway.
    3. CP railline – 3 studies currently ongoing and planned to be submitted to the City by end of July.  City Staff will then report to Council who would then hopefully give approval to pursue negotiations with CP Rail.
    4. Shifting Gears Study – City planning on hiring a consultant to update this report.  HCC would be consulted.
    5. Transportation Master Plan – Brian checking when we can review draft of cycling component.
    6. Lift Bridge – Rob said it is complete on both the Hamilton & Burlington sides – “It works well.”
    7. York Rd at Hwy 6 – Brian checking timeline for reconstruction of Olympic/York to Hwy 6.
    8. Hatt St – Daryl to write letter.
    9. Gate on east side of Confederation Park – Rob reported that night security locks the gate at 10:30pm, unlocks at 6am.  Tarquin to ask why it needs to be locked as it is not locked on the other end.
    10. Red Hill Valley – Tarquin to contact Mike Marini to ensure both legs of the “Y” connection south of Melvin are constructed.
    11. Barton crossing of RHVE– Bob reviewing notes of HCC meeting with RHV staff to ensure plans for area require no HCC action.
    12. Posting minutes on website – to be discussed when Sarah is present
    13. CANbike – Brad & Greg & Chris are pursuing actions.
    14. Ward 8 festival – Sat Sept 16 – noon to 4pm. Thom to find out about the Public Works trailer, with hopes we could integrate cycling materials with it.  We could solicit members to help staff the cycling component – but not absolutely required.  Maps would be available and ensure opportunity for people to submit comments on cards. If coordination is easy to arrange, perhaps include for August festival in Gage Park too. Discussion also of arranging a bike valet/parking area at festivals, but staffing & delivery of fencing and racks recognized as challenges.
  3. Other Business:
    1. Members were reminded that this winter will be our next revisions to the Bike Map, so make notes now of any updates to the map.  Members also reminded to take summer cycling pictures – NOW!!
    2. Sidewalk cycling – what kind of education campaign to implement?  Suggestions: reinitiate CANbike and a billboard at a critical location
    3. Road maintenance at Wentworth/Charlton – vegetation obstructing signage.  Brian to submit work order.
    4. Brian to bring hard copies of the Committeee ToR & applications to August meeting
    5. Thom wanting to organize another Bike to Work day in September for Car Free Day.
