Meeting Minutes:

  1. Minutes from last week- approved

  1. Bike to work Day/Commuter challenge

·         Contact Trevor with ideas and communicate via email

·         There is also an alternative transportation fair at McMaster on June 7th. The HCC would like to have a volunteer at both events.

o       Rob Wazny might be able to human a booth for the commuter challenge at city hall

·         Volunteers needed for both events; June 7th in the morning

·         Al will write a letter to the councillors asking them to bike/take an alternative method of transportation to work that day. He will send it to us for review first.

  1. CanBike
    • We talked about running these courses for Hamiltonians
    • Potential groups include corporate, schools, etc.
    • The courses teach people how to bike on the road

1.      They are 2 days long

2.      Usually cost $75, but the provider of the course has to price the course to cover costs to break even

3.      There are 3 different levels: kids, one and two.

4.      An instructor is needed to teach courses- Brad is a certified instructor

5.      We could advertise through the city website and money to organize this could come from the $6,000 budget

    • The person who trains police cyclists is Phil Fleming
    • The consensus was that this course is needed, and that it is in the interest of the HCC to organize this.
    • Subcommittee was formed

o       Members: Brad, Thom, Gregg, Matt, Chris

  1. Safety message for drivers
    • There are currently only 2 signs by the Hamilton safety council that exist to inform drivers about cyclists (Wellington and Hunter, Kenilworth)
    • Given the amount of deaths and the insecurity of biking (when it is illegal for bikers to ride on the sidewalk), something needs to be done.
    • Suggestions for location: flipside of HSR maps, back of buses
    • Motion passed to investigate share the road signs
  2. Joint Hamilton/Burlington/Niagara Committee meeting
    • Fonthill, Pelham Public Library on May 13th at 9am

o       Brad (100%), Tarquin (75%), Gregg + Al + Daryl (maybe)
