Michael Donaldson                             Brian Lane (absent)     Brian Applebee – Staff

1)                  Introductions

2)                  Daryl volunteered as secretary

3)                  Minutes of the January meeting were reviewed. M/S/C Feb meeting cancelled

4)                  Toronto Bike Show review – comments received were discussed (see attached), the event was very rewarding reaching Hamilton people and others, 8 Route pamphlet looks good, photos on the display should be replaced with glossy, consider a glossy table map that we could write on/erase, include a list of annual improvements to highlight progress, materials are to be stored in vault.  There is a blank box on the maps – Matt checking costing to print stickers that might read “Maps provided courtesy of the Hamilton Cycling Committee www.cyclehamilton.ca”.  Brian A checking inventory of rural bike signage.

a.       Parking motion 1: Volunteers of HCC are to be reimbursed for parking expense while staffing the booth at the Toronto Bike Show.  M/S/C 5 yea, 4 nay

b.      Parking motion 2: Funds for this reimbursement are to be taken from the HCC account at Des Jardins Credit Union. M/S/C (not so close)

c.       Parking motion 3: Anyone taking public transit is to be reimbursed equivalent to parking expense when staffing the booth at the Toronto Bike Show. M/S/C

Some discussion that maybe only people hauling cargo should be reimbursed, we do get free admission into the event ($12 value), the City would not likely approve this expense from other accounts.

5)                  Bike Racks – some errors in Concession St installation, soon to be fixed.  Last of Dundas locations are marked, soon to be installed.  Ottawa St in progress, yet to be marked.  A review of use of these racks is recommended for the future.  Schools in progress are Strathcona & George Allen, Brian was advised by ctte to encourage the schools to augment supply since City racks will only be on r-o-w.  Westdale progress has ceased, Brian to contact BIA and make happen.  Brian looking into absence of racks at City Hall.  Next locales will be shopping plazas etc.

6)                  York Road in Dundas – a request was received by a resident to look into improving this route for cyclists – from Olympic/York intersection to Valley Road.  The HCC discussed extending the scope to include all of Olympic Drive and York Road beyond Valley to Hwy 6.  This would hopefully ensure a cycling crossing of Hwy 6 as it is reconstructed to a freeway standard.  Brian checking the MTO design of the interchange.  Perhaps a multi-use trail could be developed along Olympic to provide safe access for children to community centre.

7)                  King St in Stoney Creek – some areas will be too narrow for bike lanes.  Brian bringing drawings to next meeting.

8)                  Pritchard/Stone Church – City is costing bike lanes in Pritchard north of Stone Church, Stone Church from Pritchard to Winterberry, and Winterberry from Mud to Stone Church.  Reconstruction is not scheduled for at least 5 years.  Another idea suggested was a multi-use trail on Mud to Hwy 20 since boulevard is very wide.  Daryl presented email from Marini of Red Hill project expressing no interest in meeting with HCC.  Daryl to email Chris Murray to express disappointment.

9)                  York/Hunter – terms of reference being finalized for EAs.  A consultant(s) should start within the next month.  Time may not allow a public meeting (PIC) in June, so would have to wait till Sept.  Therefore an entire summer without these facilities.  City doing its best to get done sooner rather than later.

10)              Hatt in Dundas – Market to Main as per Shifting Gears.  Councilor requested.  At least an interim facility of striping lanes being investigated.

11)              Joint Meeting Hamilton/Niagara/Burlington – proposed for May 14 at the Discovery Centre.  Agenda items: mid Peninsula Hwy, lift bridge, York EA, extending the club to include Brantford etc.  We could invite the Lake Ontario Waterfront Trust.  Second option for location would be Mac.

12)              Ontario Cycling Alliance (Velo Ontario) – a subcommittee was struck to help arrange the conference in October (location & billeting) – likely Oct 15.  Matt, Michael, Daryl and possibly Catharina.

13)              Master Plan – the timeline of the process will be presented at May meeting – Mary Lou Tanner or designate to attend.

14)              Ancaster/Paris Bike Race – April 17, Udo & Brian ensuring there are bike maps distributed or available for pick-up.

15)              Items for next meeting – bike map to include Bruce Trail, York Blvd Dundurn into core, water pipe corridor (Gage Park to Woodward)

16)              Motion to adjourn at 7 pm.

Minutes prepared by Daryl Bender
